EROAD ELD app

Overview

EROAD requires a new platform to meet current market demands. EROAD's existing ELD product (Ehubo 2) is not capable of serving customers that require a driver experience that includes workflow, and navigation. Since the Ehubo 2 is wired to the vehicle, drivers complete any admin tasks outside the cab. The companion app allows drivers to tasks outside the cab such as going ON duty when they arrive at work, certify their logs, resolve unidentified trips, and suggested edits. The ultimate goal of the companion app is to test new design concepts and workflows so that it can replace EHUBO 2 in the future.

Design Principle

Before starting the project, we need to align the design to make sure it meets our customer’s expectations and brand value.

Research

Job to be done

  • Keep drivers compliant so that they are not delayed or put out of service during roadside inspections.

  • Keep compliant records so that carriers are not fined or CSA scores affected when they are audited.

  • Identify opportunities for efficiency gains by combining HOS(hours of service) data with fleet data.

  • Provide a way for drivers to certify their logs, resolve unidentified trips, accept or reject pending edits.

  • Allow drivers to planned and modify their data by showing their HOS data, logs and allowing them to edit their logs.

  • Allow drivers to add their forms and manners such as adding and remove trailers and shipping documents.

Pains

  • I have to rely on drivers to do the right thing. Mistakes in ERODS result in fines and poor CSA scores, both of which cost me money. Drivers tell me that the mistakes in ERODS are, not their fault, the ELD is too complicated to use.

  • I worry that malfunctions with ELD will put my drivers or a vehicle out of service, this is especially true with pairing devices and offline roadside inspections.

  • I'm not confident that I will pass an HOS audit, I can't tell if there is something I have missed. My back office staff spent a lot of time going through and fixing data.

  • Having different providers for ELD, camera, workflow, make it hard for drivers to learn and difficult to manage the support for different systems.

  • It's hard to combine data from different systems

Gains

Canadian (and/or US 3rd party certification) provides peace of mind knowing that EROAD is a 100% compliant provider.

Ease of use results in reduction in driver error, training, and support.

Having an ELD that works all the time ensures that roadside inspections are as short as possible and my drivers are not going to be put out of service when it is not their fault.

An ELD with the exceptions and exemptions that I need reduces the amount of time drivers and office staff spends correcting the logs.

User journey

To understand the drivers, we needed to create a user journey map of long-haul drivers to understand their day-to-day tasks and their interaction with the current ELD device so they stay compliant. This also helps our development team and stakeholder empathize with the users.

Concept testing

To understand the value of the companion app, I did concept testing with users to validate and reduce the risk of the features we are building and determine product-market fit.

I ask people about their thoughts on some of the concepts and ideas by asking participants what they think about your concept, this will mitigate the risk of releasing a product that falls flat with customer expectations. Throughout the process, we learned more about the type of drivers and helped us better understand the users.

Summary

During the initial testing of this project, we invited the development team to be part of the interviews process. This has a huge impact on helping them think about the user needs first over technical constraints and securities. Their involvement has helped the product team prioritize high-value features with low effort and helped them come up with a technical solutions that will work. Overall the app will allow drivers to resolve ELD tasks without being in the cab while keeping them compliant in real-time, reduce being fine and keep their company score high.
